So this is my first post since the Bad Plus post forever ago, which it wouldn't publish for I don't know how long. Actually, all my blogs did that at a certain point but I was too lazy to fix most of them, seeing as how I don't post at most of them that often.
Anyway, this used to be a blog with two people posting, but since the other person who used to post posted less than I did, and hasn't posted in a few years anyway, I feel free to do whatever I want with it. Which I've decided, is not to do music reviews anymore (I don't go to any shows, and usually don't buy albums till late, and then it takes me a few months to get into the albums...), just put up my musings on music. And that way I don't clutter up my regular blog with music stuff, because I do know what it's like to read about music you don't care about/have never heard of on someone's blog, and it's boring. So... I might as well segregate the boringness from.... well, the other boringness. If anyone else reads this, and loves to pontificate at length about their musical tastes, I'd be more than willing to add you and make it a collaborative blog again.
So my first bit of new business is I'm mad at Ben Folds for re-releasing Whatever and Ever Amen with new tracks. Because I already have it. And don't want to pay for it again just to hear the new tracks. But I DO want to hear the new tracks. Ben Folds is one of only a handful of groups/artists that I would even think of buying an album of outtakes from or a live album from, and I have in the past. But I really have to draw the line at buying an album I already have just to get a few new tracks... it really bums me out, that's such a dirty trick. But sadly, I did end up pre-ordering his new album complete with all the extras (extra liner notes, a disc full of live bits and a few unreleased tracks). I'm like, this close to re-buying Whatever and Ever Amen anyway, but I have to be strong.
I've noticed, it's easier to spend when you're depressed, like I am lately because of the jerks at my job. You're like, "I deserve it! I'm sad!" At least, I am. So the day I pre-ordered my Ben Folds, I also picked up Idlewild's latest album. And I guess buying Ben Folds and Idlewild isn't that extravagant, I've been waiting for both of these albums to drop for quite some time and would've bought them no matter what. If I were on a street, broke, with nowhere to live, I'd sell a kidney to get these albums. The extravagant bit was buying all the extras (in Ben's case), and not waiting for the US release (for Idlewild). If they had a date set, I would probably give in and wait for the Idlewild album, but I don't know when that's going to be and I just want it, dammit. So I paid the extra 10 bucks for it being an import. Which just.... irritates me. That is SO much money. And I doubt it really puts Amazon out THAT much to just get it from somewhere else, seeing as how Amazon's everywhere these days. And then I bought a Death Cab For Cutie album I've been vacilating about for like, 2 years now, and I was like, "This is because I want the free shipping!" But then, I just threw in a Postal Service album (the band's a DCFC side project that someone sent me a song from not that long ago and I really liked it) for basically the hell of it.
I also got a Lifehouse album at Best Buy today. Which again, I've been waiting for a good long time. For the last few years (I'm fickle) my top bands (in no order) are Lifehouse, Ben Folds, Idlewild, Everclear, Simon and Garfunkel, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Saves the Day. These are bands I've felt that I've at least liked for several years and albums, and have loved for at least since the last album. I know I'm anal, that I have them all picked out like that. But it's true. So... again, the Lifehouse purchase wasn't that extravagant, I would've gotten it anyway. Music and books are the only things I buy. And occaisionally DVD's. I save so much on drugs and hookers, I feel I can afford to splurge on some CDs. Also, I had an easter giftcard to pay for the Lifehouse (and the discount price Last of the Mohicans DVD I picked up--sales also get me. Best Buy OWNS me) So... I'm covered, I guess.
So far I'm liking the Lifehouse, though I can't say whether or not I love it until I've listened to it 5,000 times. I'm weird that way. I've gotten to the point where I don't know whether or not it's better to like an album right off or not, because sometimes I get tired of CD's I like right away.
I also thought of buying a copy of Nevermind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols I saw on sale, but successfully resisted. Back when I had my Rock 'n' Roll in the Cinema class, I heard a couple of their songs and liked them, and I really love pop-punk, and thought maybe buying NBHSP would give me some real-punk street cred. But... I bought the Ramones greatest hits last year for ALL of those reasons and never really got into it. Plus, I mean... what's more posery than buying that album at the same time you're buying Lifehouse anyway? Probably... having a blog called "Alternatune" and posting about Lifehouse... But dude, I didn't come up with this blog name anyway, I full well know I'm about as alternative as a creampuff. Which... is a simile that doesn't even make any sense, but you know what I'm getting at.
So that's all I got for now.... Future posts should be shorter, I just had really built a lot up.
